LIFDI

offers new features  not accessible
to FI or FD.

The LIFDI capillary is rinsed before and after aspiration of ca. 40 nL analyte by gas from the headspace (usually just air) present above the sample solution.

The headspace of reactive samples consists of inert gas  (usually argon or nitrogen). Thus inert sample handling is automatically guaranteed by aspiration directly from a Schlenk flask or septum capped vial  -  without additional experimental effort.

Sample aspiration is usually performed

  • by manually dipping the orifice of the capillary in the sample solution
  • for 1-2 s.

Automated LIFDI performs aspirating of analyte for exactly defined periods of time by means of a robot rather than by hand.

Continuous supply of analyte is impossible in case of FD but described in the literature for LIFDI (even if the term LIFDI was not yet coined or popular for the first publications on continuous flow LIFDI).
